E&M Economics and Management (E&M) journal acknowledges the value of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies (AI tools) in enhancing research efficiency, insight generation, and overall outcomes. Authors submitting to E&M may use AI Tools to support manuscript preparation, but such tools must not replace human judgment, expertise, or critical evaluation. The use of AI tools should be always guided by human oversight. The authors are fully responsible and accountable for the content of their work, for the integrity and content of their manuscripts. The journal’s policy and disclosure requirements are described further below.
AI tools disclosure requirements
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in the core manuscript file, before the References list.
Statement example: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME AI TOOL / AI SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.
This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references, etc. If there is nothing to disclose, there is no need to add a statement.
The authors are accountable for
- Thoroughly examining and confirming the accuracy, completeness, and impartiality of all AI-generated content, including verifying sources, since AI-generated references may be incorrect or fabricated.
- Comprehensive editing and adapting all material to ensure the manuscript accurately represents the author’s authentic contribution and reflects their analysis, interpretation, insights, and ideas.
- It is essential to ensure that the use of any tools or sources, whether AI-based or not, is clear and transparent to readers. For the use of AI tools, a disclosure statement is required upon submission.
- Develop the manuscript in a way that protects data privacy, intellectual property, and other rights by reviewing the terms and conditions of any AI tool used.
Responsible use of AI tools
Authors must review the terms and conditions of any AI Tool to ensure data privacy, confidentiality, and compliance with copyright. Generating of the content that duplicates or references copyrighted images, real people, identifiable products, or voices has to be avoided. The factual errors and bias in in AI-generated content must be checked. Authors should review the terms and conditions of any AI tool to ensure they grant it only the rights necessary to provide the service – without permitting use of their materials for training or other purposes, and confirm that the tool’s output terms do not restrict the publication of their article.
AI Tools cannot be authors or co-authors.
AI use in figures, images, and artwork
Generative AI or AI-assisted tools may not be used to create or alter images or figures (e.g., to move, add, or remove elements) with the exceptions of basic adjustments (e.g., brightness, contrast). AI use is only permitted when it is part of the research method or design and must be fully documented in the methods section.
