When studying at universities, students often ask themselves whether or not some of studied subjects would be of any use in their future business life. Also statistics belongs among these subjects. Every one of us meets basic statistic elements in his/her life but when we consider more complex statistic models we can put a question if it is necessary for a future career of a student of economics. Answers can differ – based on a character of a job that student enters. The article is written to help a reader to better understand that statistical knowledge has been recently impor-tant for a lot of companies and if someone excellently operates with it he/she can get a very inte-resting job connected with projects where the economical knowledge is still more often combined with the statistical one. To summary the issue, Six Sigma is a quality method that can produce significant benefit to businesses and organizations. Not much text, however, has been written about this new approach to improving business. Six Sigma is focused on reduction variation by following a problem-solving approach using statistical tools with a main aim to eliminate defects. At the beginning, the paper is describing historic roots of Six Sigma, in second chapter it is taking a reader step by step through a small example project, and finally it is showing the organization of team work – very important part of Six Sigma project management. The paper deals with the main principles and ideas of Six Sigma approach, it defines basic statistical tools and theories, a structure needed for successful implementation in a company and also basics of project management. The aim of this paper is to make a reader more familiar with this statistical approach that becomes more and more popular within most successful companies all over the world. In last few years also many companies in the Czech Republic have found this partly theoretical method very useful in their everyday life.
