Anotation:
The aim of this article is to describe experiences with privatization and transformation of railways in United States, Great Britain, other countries of the European Union and New Zealand. The text shows that private rail companies in USA, UK and New Zealand can successfully compete with road transport. On the other hand the state owned rail companies in many European countries lost their market shares during the last thirty years. Therefore the transformation of railways in the European Union is prepared.
